HMO Insurance Plans
Information about Health Maintenance Organizations
A Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) insurance program is a managed care organization that provides medical services through doctors and hospitals the HMO has contracts with. Because HMO customers are limited to using only the services of contracted doctors and hospitals, HMO premiums are lower than those of other types of health insurance. HMO co-payments are usually very low, as well.
HMO insurance plans require the customer to select a Primary Care Physician (PCP). Many HMO programs allow women to have an OB/GYN in addition to a PCP. The PCP directs the customer to other medical services that they will need through a referral system. It is not possible to get HMO coverage for medical services without being referred, meaning that customers are not able to see doctors outside of the HMO network.
To ensure quality, HMO insurance organizations apply a utilization review process. Utilization review tracks the number of visits and dollar amount of HMO services offered by HMO physicians. Greater than average services provided can result in the HMO reprimanding the physician for providing nonessential HMO services. Likewise, if the HMO services provided are less than average, the physician can be reprimanded by the HMO for not providing adequate HMO health care service. Utilization review is not designed to protect the HMO customer as much as it is to protect the profitability of the HMO.
Affordable HMO Plans - Feature Low Cost HMO Premiums
HMO contracted doctors often receive set rates of payment per HMO patient per month, rather than for the services the HMO patient is provided. This helps to ensure that the doctor does not provide needless services as a way of garnishing more money from the HMO. At the same time, this method of payment by the HMO does not encourage doctors to provide sufficient HMO services.
The Benefits of an HMO Insurance Plan
A benefit of HMO insurance programs is that preventative services are often provided for free. Unlike other forms of health insurance, HMO insurance programs have more limited funding (due to low premiums) and find it more cost effective to maintain the health of HMO customers rather than providing HMO services for serious illnesses. -- It is important to balance cost of HMO insurance plans against the quality of HMO services. HMOs may not provide the best plans for specific needs provided by other types of health insurance. HMO insurance plans are only as good as the service they are able to provide.
